Tobias Meier was born 1984 in Zurich, Switzerland, and began playing saxophone at the age of ten. Among his teachers and mentors were Nat Su, Fabian Kuratli, Donat Fisch and Norbert Pfammatter. In the year 2008 he finished his studies at the conservatory of Lucerne (Musikhochschule Luzern) with a diploma in Performance and Pedagogy. Since then he is working as a freelance musician and composer in various bands and ensembles in Switzerland and Europe.
He was a member of the Generations Fellowship Award Band in 2006 and in 2008 he won the Mozart-Price of the city of Lucerne. In the same year the conservatory of Lucerne chose him as their participant for the 18th IASJ Meeting in Riga. 2010 he recieved a work contribution from the canton of Appenzell-Ausserrhoden. 2011 he was choses as one of the season's Artist-in-Residence at Moods, Zürich.
With his music and several groups from different countries, Tobias Meier has and has had the opportunity to play in Germany, Italy, Danmark, France, Austria, Spain, the Baltic States, Finland and the US.
Since 2008 he is leading and composing for his own group called "Periskop" with the Swiss musicians Norbert Pfammatter, Fabian Gisler and Nicola Romanò. Their second release "Wundersam" has been released in 2011 on WideEarRecords.
Besides his playing, Tobias Meier is also active for several cultural organisations - among others as co-organiser of the Jazzbaragge Zürich (www.jazzbaragge.ch) and Jazzwerkstatt Zürich (www.jazzwerkstatt-zuerich.ch), as founder and head of the label WER WideEarRecords (www.wideearrecords.ch) and as organiser of the Zurich based concert-series for experimental music Seismogram (www.seismogram.ch).


Tobias Meier wurde 1984 in Zürich geboren und begann im Alter von zehn Jahren, Saxophon zu spielen. Zu seinen Lehrern und Mentoren zählten unter anderem Nat Su, Fabian Kuratli, Donat Fisch und Norbert Pfammatter. Im Jahr 2008 erhielt er sein Diplom an der Musikhochschule Luzern in Performance und Pädagogik, seither ist er als freischaffender Musiker und Komponist in diversen Bands und Ensembles in der Schweiz und Europa unterwegs.
2006 war er Mitglied der Generations Fellowship Award Band, 2008 Preisträger des Mozart-Preises der Stadt Luzern. Im selben Jahr wählte ihn die Musikhochschule Luzern als ihr Teilnehmer am 18. internationalen IASJ Meeting in Riga. 2010 erhielt er einen Werkbeitrag der Appenzell-Ausserrhodischen Kulturstiftung. 2011 wurde er als einer der Artists-in-Residences des Moods Zürich ausgewählt.
Mit seiner Musik und in Ensembles aus verschiedenen Ländern war Tobias Meier schon in Deutschland, Italien, Dänemark, Frankreich, Österreich, Spanien, Finland, Estland und den USA zu Gast.
Seit 2008 leitet und komponiert er zudem für sein eigenes Ensemble "Periskop" mit den Schweizer Musikern Norbert Pfammatter, Fabian Gisler und Nicola Romanò. Mitte 2011 erschien auf WideEarRecords die zweite CD "Wundersam".
Nebenbei ist Tobias Meier auch organisatorisch im Kulturbereich engagiert - unter anderem als Vorstandsmitglied der Jazzbaragge Zürich (www.jazzbaragge.ch), als Mitorganisator der Jazzwerkstatt Zürich (www.jazzwerkstatt-zuerich.ch), als Gründer und Kopf des Labels WER WideEarRecords (www.wideearrecords.ch) und als Organisator der Konzertreihe für Experimentelles und Ungehörtes Seismogram (www.seismogram.ch).
